I am not a swimmer, so why should I care about a new pool for at Torrey Pines High School?

But, I am a community member...I am interested in...

Education: Achievement in academics and sports go hand-in-hand.
Property Values: An excellent aquatic amenity such as this would raise property values for the people who live close to it.
Crime: A further opportunity for after school programming and weekend use will deter youth from crime
Safety: Pools provide a place for training in water safety and in life saving techniques

But I am a business owner/employer...I am interested in...

Health Care Costs: Exercise leads to healthier people, healthy people require less medical attention and experience less absenteeism.
Business Recruiting and Retention: Businesses have a hard time attracting desired team members to relocate in this area due to perceived disadvantages in quality of life concerns.
Sustainability: Desirable activities that are closer to home reduce peoples' daily travel needs and contribute to reduced traffic congestion

But I am a community leader... and I am interested in...

My community: A desirable new swimming pool will help define Carmel Valley as a City with its own character and services, rather than as an adjunct community to a larger city where all the principle facilities are
Respect for citizens: The presence of such a facility is an acknowledgement of approval for those willing to participate in activities that society favors. The lack of facilities of this class, when the area is affluent, is a statement that leaders do not care about the health of their citizens or the well-being of their youth. It is additionally a statement that individuals will have to fend for themselves if they are going to do what is healthy, challenging, and right.
Civic pride: A quality swim center can become a landmark capable of identifying Carmel Valley beyond its local boundaries. Landmarks form brand identity, which promotes tourism, business relocation, and political clout.
Tax base: This facility will keep more residents within the city boundaries and attract outsiders to the city. Their greater presence would increase the amount of purchases within the city, thus increasing sales tax revenues.
